30 days to create a habit

Exercise is a powerful drug, and for some, a drug that can provide even more healing and relief than anything a doctor might prescribe. Elusive diseases such as cancer, and breast cancer in particular, are often debilitating physically but also incredibly frustrating mentally. And sometimes, a little bit of good old exercise can generate powerful mental benefits.
It is now known from widespread follow-up of screening programmes that breast cancer is curable. The smaller the breast cancer, the better the rate of cure. Breast cancer that is 5mm in size of tumor has a 95% cure rate. A breast cancer tumor that is 1cm in size has a 90% chance of cure. A breast cancer that is palpable needs to be 2.5cm in size on average. These breast cancers are only 60% curable. On Saturday 19th November, cityfitness clubs across New Zealand are hosting the New Zealand Breast Cancer Research Trust Ride-a-thon. This is a four hour event that we are hosting at 16 locations nationwide, consisting of four consecutive group ride classes from 8:30am – 12:30pm. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the NZBCRT. With the potential to host over 1500 participants we are aiming to raise $25,000 – a significant contribution to the quest to find a cure.
Group fitness ‘regulars’ are not the only ones encouraged to attend this ride – anyone who wishes to contribute to this powerful cause may participate. Fit or unfit, coordinated or uncoordinated, member or non-member...all are welcome. Each bike will cost $40 for the duration of the event. The idea is to encourage a group of people to get together and sign up for a team seat for the four hours, and then decide how many riders will participate and for how long – a team could have 40 people if they wanted. Riding together on this day is our way of showing that together, we can make a difference both in and out of the gym.
