FAQs about group fitness

What is group fitness

Group fitness classes are high-energy, motivating workouts that add variety, fun and challenge to your workout programme. They’re a great way to complement your weight or treadmill routines, or your workouts with a personal trainer.

You join a group of people in one of our studios, and train together to music with one of our fully qualified instructors. All of our instructors have gone through rigorous training programmes, and are always ready to provide you with a challenging, safe, results-oriented workout.

cityfitness offers a wide range of classes from core work to high-intensity intervals to yoga and Pilates-based programmes. These workouts build endurance and target all muscle groups using innovative equipment and well-researched training techniques. All classes are FREE for cityfitness members.

How long are the classes

Most classes are 55-minutes long. We also offer 45-minute versions that are perfect for people on-the-go, or those new to group fitness. cityfitness also offers several 30-minute classes at select locations.

What training and experience do the instructors have

All our instructors are REPs qualified, which means they are on the Register of Exercise Professionals administered by Fitness New Zealand. They have a relevant formal qualification, and complete ongoing training every year.

Which class should I choose first

Pick the class that best suits your goals, experience and – most of all – personal preference, because you want to enjoy it! Check out the class descriptions to help you choose, or ask any of our team members for advice. You might also like to start with one of the shorter classes.

What should I wear

Comfortable exercise clothing and soft-soled trainer shoes are recommended for most classes. In abdominal or Pilates and yoga based classes, we recommend not wearing loose, baggy shorts, or suggest wearing bike shorts underneath them if you do.

Do I have to warm up first, and then warm down after

Rest assured that all of our classes include appropriate warm-up and cool-down exercises.

Can I just turn up to a class, or do I have to book in first

Show up to a group fitness class whenever suits you. However, we recommend booking in advance for the indoor cycling classes at some clubs – contact your local club for details.

I’m a bit nervous about trying out a class. Can I leave halfway through if I want to

People love our classes! Sometimes this may cause newcomers to feel intimidated, as most participants may seem to know what they are doing. Don't worry; new students are always welcome, and after a few classes you'll be a pro like the rest of them. Remember that everyone there was a beginner once, too! If you think you might want to leave early, let the instructor know before the class starts – but we strongly recommend staying in the studio, even just to observe. Plus we suggest you try a range of classes to find the ones you love the most.

How often does the group fitness timetable change

One of the exciting things about the BTS group fitness classes we exclusively offer is that new variations are introduced every season. So we change the group fitness timetable quarterly for this, for member preferences, and for introducing brand new classes sometimes. We always welcome your feedback about group fitness, and have dedicated group fitness managers at every club to whom you can also direct your feedback.

I want to be a group fitness instructor! How can I be

We offer a full training and selection programme at cityfitness called citytraining. Explore more about becoming a group fitness instructor.

FAQs about membership

Do you have women's only areas

Some of our clubs do offer women’s only areas, please contact your club of choice to find out if this service is available. At clubs where we don’t offer women’s only areas we do have programmes specifically designed to help women achieve their goals in a non-threatening environment – an example is the weight management programme which provides you with the constant support of a trainer and encourages the development of a support network with other participants who have similar goals and experience to you.

How busy do you get

Like all gyms our busiest times are immediately before and after normal working hours. Because of our commitment to exceptional customer service we have a high ratio of equipment to members; you won’t be waiting in line here. If you prefer to come at the quieter times then mid-morning, early afternoon, and later in the evening may suit you.

What should I wear or bring

You should wear comfortable clothing and closed toe shoes in all gym areas, and carry a towel and water bottle with you.

Do you have free parking

You can use our private car parks as long as you attach a cityfitness bumper sticker to your car. cityfitness clubs without free car parking are conveniently located near paid 120-minute car parks, public transport routes and taxi stands.

How much does membership cost

cityfitness clubs offer a range of membership options starting from just $13.90 per week. The price depends on how long you would like to commit for and which cityfitness club you would like to join. There are NO hidden fees — just low weekly payments.

How long do I have to join for

Your membership can be for as long as is appropriate to you. We have members who have been with us for almost 20 years and members who visit us casually. Also you don’t have to join to enjoy many of the benefits of the gym — we offer casual use and concession cards. Of course we value loyalty and reward longer associations appropriately.

What is included in my membership

Standard memberships include free access to the gym anytime it is open, free structured programming and nutrition, free group fitness classes (including indoor cycle and Zumba®), use of all weights and cardio equipment, sauna/steam rooms, basketball courts (where available), changing facilities and much more. You also have the option of getting discounts on specialised courses/programmes, personal training/nutrition, massage, and sun tanning.

Can I suspend my membership

Memberships can be put on hold due to illness or overseas travel. If you are travelling within New Zealand and have a blackcard membership, then it's likely there will be a cityfitness club in your destination in which you can work out for no extra charge.

How do I cancel my membership

If you’re thinking of cancelling your membership but you’re still within the minimum term of your membership agreement, you will incur an early cancellation fee. Please click here to view the early cancellation fee and default fee table outlining how the cancellation fees are structured.

If the minimum term on your membership has been reached, cityfitness requires 30 days notice in writing requesting to cancel your membership. You can do this by filling in a form at the club or contacting our customer care team.

FAQs about personal training

What can I expect from my personal trainer

Your personal trainer supports you in achieving the results you want. They will discuss your exercise goals, health and fitness background with you, and then design a programme that perfectly suits you and your needs. They will work one-on-one with you at all times, monitor your progress, and update your training accordingly.

Which personal trainer should I use

You can choose any personal trainer you like based on their profile, or one of our experienced membership consultants can match you with the most suitable trainer. You’re free to change personal trainer at any time.

How often should I see a personal trainer

This is something very individual and is best talked about with your personal trainer. Once a week is common, but people use personal trainers from anywhere between three times a week, and once every six weeks.

What training/experience do cityfitness personal trainers have

All our personal trainers are REPs registered, have a relevant formal qualification, and complete ongoing training each year to maintain and improve the quality of service they provide.

All cityfitness personal trainers undertake our advanced specialisation courses to guarantee ongoing development of their skills and knowledge. These cover neuromuscular stretching techniques, performance enhancement, corrective exercise, and exercise for special populations such as youth, pre- and post-natal women and seniors.
